Is The Dog Actually Comfortable?
The Subtle Signs Photographers Often Miss
You know how to create a beautiful photograph, but do you know how to truly read the subject in front of you?
You know how to create a beautiful photograph, but do you know how to truly read the subject in front of you?
You know how to create a perfect photograph…
But, are you paying attention to what your subject is telling you while you're creating it?
Dogs communicate constantly through their body language, and some of their most subtle signals are easy to miss when you're focused on getting the shot.
Learn to recognize what your canine client is truly communicating—and you'll know when to keep shooting, when to change your approach, and when to give them what they need.
Why body language is essential to understand when working with pets (and for more reasons than you might think)
The subtle signs photographers often miss that will help you start seeing your canine clients in a whole new way
My three-step process for working with dogs to help them feel comfortable, understood, and able to thrive during a session
We'll come back to those same photographs at the end for dissection and see if you can notice the differences after we share some of the most common stress signals.
You are building a pet photography business, starting a pet photography business, or work with dogs as a more generalist photographer
You've had trouble working with dogs who are high energy, stressed, anxious, nervous, etc
You've ever wondered whether a dog was actually comfortable during a session
You've had a dog who "just wouldn't give you anything”
You want to become better at advocating for your canine clients
You want to create better experiences without expecting every dog to behave perfectly
You want to elevate your photography by being able to better work and understand your canine subjects
My photography journey began by photographing homeless shelter dogs to help them find their forever homes. What started as a hobby quickly became a life's work.
Since then, I've had the privilege of photographing more than 1,000 dogs through my client and rescue work—dogs of all backgrounds, ages, breeds, sizes, temperaments, and energy levels.
Along the way, I've studied canine body language and behavior through workshops, observation, reading, training, and more so I can better understand and advocate for the dogs in front of my camera. (I also have two spicy dogs with big feelings about things, so they've helped me learn a thing or four hundred along the way.)
Over the years, I realized there was a gap in the way we learn and approach pet photography.
We spend so much time learning about equipment, lighting, composition, trends, and editing—but not nearly as much time learning how to actually work with the animal in front of us.
And the more dogs I photographed, particularly through my rescue work, the more I realized that understanding canine behavior wasn't just helpful—it fundamentally changed the way I approached my sessions and the photographs I was able to create.
That's why I created this webinar: to help photographers learn to see what their canine clients are communicating—and use that information to create better experiences for both the dog and the person behind the leash.
